Telangana: Tutor Gets Life Term For Raping Ten Minor Girls At NGO That Hired Him

The survivors were between ages nine and 11 at the time of the assault.

Telangana NGO rape case: A 28-year-old tutor was recently sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Telangana on multiple counts of rape. The tutor who had been hired by a non-governmental organisation was found guilty of sexually abusing ten minor girls and assaulting two minors, between nine to 11 years old in 2014. the NGO, who hired him were providing food and shelter to school-going students in a tribal district of the state.

The punishment was given by a local court of Nalgonda in Telangana. Along with the accused, the NGO organiser and his wife were punished too. The organisers were sentenced to life too for not informing the authorities of the incidents immediately and the wife was sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment.

Along with the life sentence, the accused has been fined Rs. 10,000.

The minors aged between 9 to 11 years were students of classes between four and five in 2014 when the incident came to light. The incident occurred in a span of five months. The public prosecutor said that the tutor was hired by the NGO to teach the students at the hostel after school hours. However, the accused convinced the organisers to let him stay in the hostel which accommodated 44 girls and 34 boys.

After he was allowed to live on the campus,  he allegedly raped and assaulted 12 girls at the hostel and at his home. Not only that he threatened the minors with a knife too. This went on till 2014 until the survivors narrated their ordeal to a cousin of one of the students who visited the hostel and a case was registered against the tutor on January 3, 2014.

The case was investigated by the then Halia Circle Inspector Anad Reddy and the Miryalaguda DSP Subhash Chandra Bose. They filed the charge sheet against the accused and the couple, who ran the NGO. Later, according to the doctor's report and statements by the survivors, the charges of rape against 10 survivors and sexual assault against the other two was proven.

Incidents of Rape And Sexual Assault

- On December 17, 2020,  the headmaster of a primary school in Chintawarray village of Telangana was accused of sexually assaulting five minor girls studying in the same school. The survivors aged between 7 and 11 years and were allegedly raped by the accused. The assault began in August 2020 and the incident came to light when a survivor fell sick and while undergoing treatment in hospital confided in her mother. The 40-year-old accused would allegedly give personal classes to the minor girls during the pandemic since they did not own a smartphone for attending online classes. - At Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, 17 girl students were allegedly molested and drugged by the owner of the school. The incident took place on November 17 night, when the owner of the school where the survivors studied asked 17 of them to come to the school, where the crime took place under the pretext of practical examination. The survivors allege that two accused molested them and threatened them to stay silent on the incident. The two accused were charged with sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Read more about the case here.

- In November last year, a 20-year-old student was allegedly sexually assaulted by the lecturer. The survivor alleged the lecturer using "psychotropic substances" too. The incident took place in Pilibhit, which is 256.5 kilometers away from the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow. The survivor alleged that the lecturer has been sexually assaulting her for months. She alleged that he kept sex toys and "obscene literature at his place. Read more about the incident here.
