Film aficionados cannot contain their excitement as acclaimed director Christopher Nolan’s Tenet releases this weekend. Nolan’s film features John David Washington and Robert Pattinson in lead roles, alongside our very own Dimple Kapadia and Elizabeth Debicki. You may have heard of Debicki’s name pop up this year frequently, and not just in the context of Tenet.
The Australian actor will also play the role of Diana, Princess of Wales in the fifth season of The Crown. The makers of this hit Netflix series had made an announcement for the same earlier this year. Debicki will take over from newcomer Emma Corrin, the actress who plays a younger Diana in the show’s fourth season.
“It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one,” said the star in a statement, as quoted by CNN Entertainment.
Who is Elizabeth Debicki?
Debicki was born in Paris to a Polish father and Australian mother. However, the family shifted to Melbourne, Australia when she was just five-years-old. Since both of her parents were ballet dancers she too became interested in the dance form and trained as a dancer. After a few years though, she decided to switch to theatre and in 2010 earned a degree in drama at the Victorian College of the Arts, as reported by Grazia.
After graduating from the drama school she made her debut in an Australian film called A Few Best Men, alongside Rebel Wilson and Olivia Newton John. In the movie, she made a brief appearance as a secretary. After watching her audition reel, director Baz Luhrmann decided to cast her in his film The Great Gatsby. Debicki won the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in the film. In 2012, she also did her first photoshoot for Vogue Australia.
Since her debut she has been a part of several films like Breath, HBO film The Tale, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Widows, Everest among many others.
Elizabeth Debicki has also done television series like The Night Manager, an adaptation of the John le Carré novel of the same name starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman. The show aired in the United States. Following the success of The Night Manager, Debicki landed a supporting role in the Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which she portrayed Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign people.
In 2014, the Sydney Theatre Awards honoured her with the Best Newcomer title for her performance in the play Maids. For her acting in the television series The Kettering Incident she won an AACTA Award for Best Lead Actress In Television Drama. The star has also won Trophee Chopard, which is awarded by the jury to two young actors at the Cannes Film Festival, as reported by Variety. Debicki also won the Best Supporting Actress award from the Hawaii Film Critics Society for the film Widows.
