Single Bengali girls will resonate thisBengali parents on television are often very similar to the real parents we have. Always protective of their children, feeding (read overfeeding) their kids, fretting over their 'shona's' studies and trying to get their 'dushtu mae' married. Things really go a notch up when their daughter has come of marriage age and parents tend to keep 'an eye' on who their daughter meets at pujo pandals. These are five things I believe all single Bengali girls are done with hearing from their parents.

Bengali or not, Indian mothers always want their daughters to return home 'early'. Of course, they say this out of concern but it’s also important to accept that grown-up daughters can be independent and take care of themselves. I firmly believe Bengali mothers should now start seeing their single daughters as individual humans and not just an extension of their own selves. No offence to anyone.

Once you are in your 20s, your singlehood starts worrying your parents. Their only motive then remains to get you married. Dear Bengali parents, shouldn't you let your daughter take that decision on her own? Why can't we look at the custom of marriage as a personal choice instead of a compulsion? Kindly start valuing your daughter's happiness over her marital status. For me, the right time to get married is when you are ready and not when your parents want you to.

Hypocrisy comes when your parents are keen to marry you off but can't bear to see you hanging out with your guy friends. How is it okay to 'settle down' with a stranger but not have fun with friends? Ironically, the parents who never approve of their daughters being friends with boys are the first ones to get them married to someone they don't even know. Like are you serious?

When a Bengali mother says this, you are supposed to understand that you cannot do whatever you please. She usually says this when you have been repeatedly asking her permission for something and she has been denying it but you just don’t stop asking. Both are equally to be held responsible in this situation, I suppose.

5. Toke Aar Kicchu Bolar Neyi

This literally means, “I have nothing to tell you”. To be honest, Bengali parents can say this to you any time even if it’s completely out of context. Whether you want to party with your friends or wear the clothes of your choice, your parents use this as their weapon to change your mind.

Here are my 5 things single Bengali girls are done hearing. Which ones do you get most?

Though I don’t have any complaints with the way my parents brought me up, I do think Bengali single daughters have done nothing to deserve to hear these taunts. We shall reform our ways according to our parent’s desire if we go wrong someday but shouldn’t parents reform their ways too when talking to their single daughters?  What according to you are some of the most common things Bengali single daughters are done with hearing?
