32-year-old Jyoti Nainwal is the first in her late husband’s family of jawans and other non-officer rankers, to hold the rank of an officer.
He said that it is the “first step towards gender equality” in the armed forces. He added, “at least 40 years down the line” a woman officer will be in the same position where he is.
The Defence Minister added that the induction process of women in the Military Police had started last year marking a major milestone when women joined in the rank and file of the Army.
“Prima facie it seems it took place due to a family dispute but we are investigating, ” the police said.
Women army officers claim that they have been denied the provision of ‘Permanent Commission’ in the army.
The officers’ petition said that the Indian Army had denied PC to “meritorious and outstanding women” on the basis of “unknown, undisclosed, and surreptitious parameters” that deviated from those applicable for male officers.
The woman officers have said that the physical test lacked a scientific foundation and due to insufficient training, multiple women could be disqualified.
