The much-awaited Hindi film, Sardar Udham is based on the life of the freedom fighter Udham Singh. In a pre-release interview, Sircar said that he does not want the film to be limited to Punjab and that the message should go far across the world.

Adding that he could have added titles like a martyr, kamboj, sunam to the freedom fighter's name but he considers Udham Singh to be his friend and can feel his presence.

The film is a Rising Sun Films Production, which is backed by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar. According to a media report, the film has a massive budget.

While the film's shoot was over in December 2019, the post-production process of the film took longer than expected. Plus, Sircar sold his film Gulabo Sitabo to Amazon Prime Videos in early pandemic days as he wanted to wait and give Sardar Udham a theatrical release.

The film was earlier scheduled to release on October 2, 2020. The plan was interrupted by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The date of release was postponed indefinitely. The film is set to release on October 16.

The film, directed by Sircar, is based on the life of this revolutionary. The trailer offered glimpses of Udham Singh's operation, from planning to execution. In the video, we see him arrive in England under a false identity, stalk Dwyer across London and then carry out the assassination.

"Sardar Udham is the name of the film. Sardar Udham Singh pr Shaheed Sardar Udham Singh was his name...and it is very much a part of the film. 'Sardar Udham' is my samajh (understanding) of him.
