According to investigators, the accused allegedly attacked her elderly roommate with a vicious combination of beating and stabbing, leading to his tragic death.

The victim was found with stark evidence of the ordeal - blunt force trauma to the back of his head and multiple stab wounds across his torso.

The gruesome discovery was made after firefighters rushed to extinguish a fire that had engulfed their residence.

As the flames were subdued, the lifeless body of the victim lay on the floor, casting a grim shadow over the scene.

A Desperate Attempt to Conceal

In a desperate attempt to erase any traces of her heinous act, Maks resorted to an astonishing and bewildering act of self-covering.

As per the reports, she doused herself in Mountain Dew in a bid to rid her body of any potential forensic evidence.

The authorities discovered Maks outside a nearby restaurant, dishevelled and barefoot.

When confronted by the police, she shockingly dropped a knife and a hammer at their feet. Strangely, she denied any knowledge of the victim, claiming to be homeless.

Further investigation by the Daytona Beach police exposed a series of contradictions in her statements.

With mounting suspicion, the officers took her into custody for questioning. The gravity of the situation deepened when the police informed Maks of their intention to obtain a sample of her DNA through a warrant.

What transpired next was nothing short of baffling - Maks, seemingly intent on thwarting the investigation, requested a Diet Mountain Dew.

While drinking the beverage, officers observed her displaying procrastination, as if buying time.

An attempt to retrieve the drink from her led to a stunning turn of events - Maks proceeded to douse herself with the soda, pouring it over her body and hair. The bizarre act, which was reportedly an attempt to destroy potential DNA evidence, only served to further perplex law enforcement.

Despite this bizarre effort, the investigation revealed a damning detail that directly linked Maks to the crime scene.

Her DNA was discovered on the handle of a knife that was found lying near the victim's body.

The attempt to erase her traces using the sugary beverage ultimately fell short in the face of meticulous forensic scrutiny.

As the investigation unfolds, Nichole Maks finds herself in the custody of Volusia County Jail, held without bond.

Her court appearance is scheduled for September 5, where she will face the weight of the evidence against her.

A Scientific Backing

In a twist that adds to the intrigue of this tragic case, a recent study  from North Carolina State University has shed light on the potential impact of artificial sweeteners found in Diet Mountain Dew.

The study suggests that sucralose, a common ingredient in such beverages, may have the ability to break down genetic material, including DNA.

While the implications of this revelation remain a subject of scientific exploration, it adds an unexpected layer to the disturbing series of events that have gripped the community.
