Shabaash Mithu is based on the life and achievements of Mitali Dorai Raj, ODI captain of the Indian women's cricket team. The film is directed by Rahul Dholakia, written by Priya Aven and is being produced by Viacom 18 Studios.

The Mission Mangal actor, Taapsee Pannu trained under Nooshin Al Khadeer who is Raj's batch mate from college and also her friend. Khadeer has helped Pannu master Raj's iconic cricket style and other aspects of the cricketer's personality like her poise, stance and many other unique traits.

While talking about the film, Pannu said that it was daunting to play Mithali Raj on the screen because the stakes are high. "Mithali Raj is an excellent player who has made records for her 50s and has also surpassed the 10,000-run mark becoming the highest scorer in women's cricket. She is one of the most experienced women cricket players so there is a lot of pressure to play her on-screen, she said.
