Vikram Batra met Dimple Cheema at Punjab University, where the two had enrolled for a post-graduate course- MA in English. Batra left the course midway after clearing the Defence Services Examination and Cheema couldn't finish it either. However, their courtship, which started in the corridors of Punjab university went on for four years, until the captain attained martyrdom during the 1999 Kargil War.

Since Batra would be away for long spells due to his training and service, the two didn't spend much time together. In fact, it is now being said that Cheema and Batra were together only for 40 days throughout the period of their relationship. This information was shared by the writer of Shershaah, Sandeep Srivastava, during an interview. When he met Cheema while prepping for the film, she said that while Captain Batra and she knew each other for four years, the time they spent together was just about 40 days.

She is a very integral part of Captain Vikram Batra’s life, you cannot tell his story without his relationship with Dimple, and without what he did in the war: Shershaah writer Sandeep Srivastava.

There have been many speculations about Cheema and Batra's relationship. Were the two engaged? Did they get married? The speculations were flamed by certain sequences in Shershaah where Malhotra's Batra is seen using his blood as sindoor to apply on Cheema's forehead. However, Captain Batra's twin brother Vishal clarified that the two were not engaged, however, their families did intend to get the duo married in future.

So are the sequences depicted in Shershaah purely fictional? Not exactly. In one of the rare interviews that Cheema has given till date, she revealed that the sindoor incident did take place. During one of his visits Cheema had asked Batra about their impending marriage. She said that in response, Batra had taken out a blade from his wallet, used it to cut his thumb and then filled her maang with his blood. The duo also did parikramas at Nada Saheb gurudwara as depicted in the film.

After Batra passed away, Cheema refused to get married to anyone else and continues to live as his widow even today. Vikram Batra's brother said that he and his parents tried to encourage Cheema to move on in life, but she chose not to marry.
