During the ongoing Asian Games 2023, India's Men's 10m Air Rifle Team not only won the nation's first gold medal but also broke the world record in the process.

India Shoots For Gold

Comprising Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil, Divyansh Singh Panwar, and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, the team secured victory with a total score of 1893.7 points in the individual qualification round. This score surpassed the previous world record, which had been set by China at the Baku World Championship. South Korea secured second place with 1890.1 points, while China came in third with a total score of 1888.2.

In the team event, Rudrankksh, who finished third in the qualification round, contributed 631.6 points. Aishwary registered 631.6 points, and Divyansh scored 629.6 points for India.

Notably, India not only claimed gold in the team event but also had all three shooters qualify for the top 8 in the 10m Air Rifle event. However, in accordance with Asian Games rules allowing only two participants from each country to qualify for the final, Rudrankksh and Aishwary advanced to the final, while Divyansh missed out.

The initial series saw a slight dip in performance from the Indian shooters, with Rudrankksh and Divyansh both scoring 104.8 points, and Aishwary earning 104.1 points. Nevertheless, they quickly regained their composure and steadily improved their scores in subsequent series. By the sixth series, the team had not only secured victory but also broken the world record with an impressive total of 1893.7 points.

What Does The Win Mean?

The victory held significant importance as it marked India's first gold medal at the Asian Games 2023, setting a positive tone for the country's overall performance at the event. On the first official day, India clinched five medals in total, including three silver medals and two bronze medals.

Additionally, the women's 10m air rifle team, featuring Ashi Chouksey, Mehuli Ghosh and Ramita Jindal, made their mark by securing India's first medal at Hangzhou 2023, earning a silver in shooting.

India accumulated a combined score of 1886 points, earning them a silver medal. In the qualification round, Ramita Jindal achieved a score of 631.9, securing second place, while Mehuli Ghosh finished fifth with a score of 630.8. Unfortunately, Ashi Chouksey did not qualify for the final eight.

The shooting competitions at the Asian Games 2023 are scheduled to continue until October 1, with a total of 33 gold medals at stake across rifle, pistol, and shotgun categories.
