What is a female condom? It is a type of contraception that is a barrier device used during a sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancies. It was invented by Danish MD Lasse Hessel. As per Indian statistics, the onus of preventing pregnancies lies on women and that's why there is interest in knowing how this contraceptive works.

Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr. Sudeshna Ray spoke with SheThePeople at length and explained at length about female condom and other contraceptives.

What is a female condom? Everything we know about the contraceptive

  1. A female condom is designed in a way that it can be worn internally by a woman during vaginal sex so as to prevent being exposed to her partner's ejaculated semen.
  2. This method of contraception can help women can take a little more control themselves about their protection against pregnancy and infection.
  3. This has to be inserted into the vagina about 8 hours before sexual intercourse. It can stay up to 8 hours before the intercourse but it should be discarded immediately after the act.
  4. The typical rate of failure is about 14 per cent. However, incorrect or inconsistent usage can lead up to a 21 per cent of failure.
  5. The most recent version of a female condom is made up of natural latex. It does not make the noise that one experiences with plastic condoms. Also, it easily fits against the female anatomy.
  6. Water or silicone-based lubricants can be used safely with any female condom. However, one should avoid the usage of oil with a female condom made up of latex.
  7. A female condom does not affect a woman's natural hormone levels and can be purchased without a doctor's prescription.
  8. Female condoms enhance sex and sexual play for both the partners. The external ring of the condom can stimulate the clitoris and penis during the intercourse.
  9. This contraceptive has some disadvantages as well. It may cause irritation of the genital area in both sexes and can slip into the vagina during the intercourse.
  10. The usage of this condom can reduce sensation during sexual intercourse
