US Vice President Kamala Harris received the second dose of the coronavirus vaccine on January 26. Harris' vaccination at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was streamed live on television. "I want to urge everyone to take the vaccine when it is your turn," she urged Americans to get vaccinated adding that "It will save your life." Her husband Doug Emhoff too received the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
Harris had taken her first Moderna vaccine dose on December 29 in order to boost the confidence of the United States citizens in the vaccination.
Before taking her second shot, she took to her Twitter handle on Sunday and reminded people to "Wear a mask - Stay socially distanced - Avoid large indoor gatherings."
Harris assured that "Together, we can save lives."
Last week, Harris became the 49th Vice President of the United States. She is the first woman, first Black and first South Asian person to hold the office. Joe Biden, on the other hand, is now 46th President of the US. In her first tweet, as the US Vice President, from her official handle, Kamala Harris, a South Asian descent (who traces her origin to Tamil Nadu), tweeted, “Ready to serve.”
Harris had officially resigned from her Senate seat before the inauguration ceremony this month. She was the second Black woman US senator, winning the election from California 17 years after Democrat Carol Moseley Braun.
Kamala Harris is the daughter of researcher Shyamala Gopalan from Chennai and is married to lawmaker Douglas Emhoff. Harris’ husband is now the first-ever ‘Second Gentleman’ of the US– the first male spouse of a Vice President in the US.
