Hathras Gangrape and murder

A 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hathras was reportedly gangraped by four upper-caste men, while she was out collecting fodder for animals with her mother. The woman succumbed to her injuries at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital and died on September 29, two weeks after the incident. It was also reported that her cremation was carried out against her family’s wish. Reportedly her last rite was performed in the middle of the night "forcibly" by the UP police. The incident led to a nation-wide outrage both against the state government and local police.

Then in early September, a three-year-old girl was found strangulated in a sugarcane field in the same district. Autopsy reports confirmed that the girl had been sexually assaulted. The father of the deceased girl had called this an act of revenge by another villager.

Balrampur Gangrape

On October 1, a 22-year-old Dalit woman was reportedly gangraped after being drugged in Balrampur. The woman was a BCom student who worked at a private firm. She had left her home to pay her college fee and was allegedly abducted by the perpetrators on her way back. She passed away while being taken to a hospital in Lucknow for treatment.
