Facing backlash over incidences of rapes in Hathras, Balrampur and Lakhimpur over the past few months, Uttar Pradesh government is now taking measures to strengthen women’s safety in the state. The Yogi Adityanath led government is now setting up a ”Data Analytical Centre” for women safety under women power line 1090.

Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Kumar Awasthi told media, “In order to strengthen the safety measures for women under a safe city, the government is building a Data Analytical Centre under women power line 1090. The government has ordered to implement this as soon as possible.”

Reportedly, Awasthi said that with the help of this centre, the hot spots where crime against women are taking place will be identified, following which police forces will be deployed to the area.

Crimes against women in UP

The UP government has taken this measure following immense backlash over its handling of the Hathras gangrape and murder. However, this wasn’t the only rape case to happen in UP over the past few months. Here are some recent cases of sexual crimes against women in the state:

Hathras Gangrape and murder

A 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hathras was reportedly gangraped by four upper-caste men, while she was out collecting fodder for animals with her mother. The woman succumbed to her injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital and died on September 29, two weeks after the incident. It was also reported that her cremation was carried out against her family’s wish. Reportedly her last rite was performed in the middle of the night “forcibly” by the UP police. The incident led to a nation-wide outrage both against the state government and local police.

Lakhimpur rape cases

A 17-year-old girl was raped and her body was discovered mutilated near a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district in August this year. The girl was reportedly out to visit a neighbouring town to fill out a scholarship form. When she failed to return home, her family informed the local police.

On August 15 this year, a 13-year-old girl was reportedly found raped and strangulated in a sugarcane field. Two men were reportedly arrested in connection with the case.

Then in early September, a three-year-old girl was found strangulated in a sugarcane field in the same district. Autopsy reports confirmed that the girl had been sexually assaulted. The father of the deceased girl had called this an act of revenge by another villager.

Balrampur Gangrape

On October 1, a 22-year-old Dalit woman was reportedly gangraped after being drugged in Balrampur. The woman was a BCom student who worked at a private firm. She had left her home to pay her college fee and was allegedly abducted by the perpetrators on her way back. She passed away while being taken to a hospital in Lucknow for treatment.
