Priyanka Gandhi Vadra posted a series of tweets that criticised the unfavourable state of women’s safety in India. Vadra’s tweets emphasised that “India’s women will no longer stay quiet” about the injustices they face and will take the matter of their safety in their own hands.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra: “Speak Up For Women Safety”

Vadra’s first tweet said that discrediting and shaming the oppressed/aggrieved women survivors of crimes was a shameful and cowardly act. She wrote in Hindi, “ Crimes against women are on a rise. Amidst this, instead of listening to their truths and voices, to levy accusations against them is the most shameful and cowardly act. But the women of this country will no longer stay silent.”

In her second tweet, the Congress leader wrote that Indian women will now take up the responsibility of their safety. The tweet read, “ If one sister is accused, millions of other sisters will raise their voice and stand with her. We are taking on our own responsibility. Now women will have to take the matter of women's safety in their own hands.” She ended her Twitter thread with a hashtag that read, “Speak Up For Women Safety.”

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Voices Outrage Over Hathras Gangrape Case

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s tweets come in the wake of the recent Hathras gangrape case that shook the nation last month. On September 14, 2020 four upper-caste men allegedly raped and a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. She succumbed to her injuries and died in Delhi on September 29, 2020, while undergoing treatment.

Vadra and her brother, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, also met the late survivor’s family on October 3. The duo was only able to do so on their second attempt after being detained and manhandled by the Uttar Pradesh police the first time around.
