Navi Mumbai Extortion Case: Five persons including the alleged rape survivor were arrested by the NRI Coastal Police in Navi Mumbai on Thursday for allegedly extorting money from the wife of the rape accused.

The accused persons in the case were allegedly taking money from the rape accused's wife to withdraw the case. As per reports, the police had arrested the rape accused earlier this month for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman. One woman who claimed to be a social worker allegedly approached the rape accused's wife and asked for Rs 14 Lakh in order to withdraw the case filed against her husband.

The wife reportedly told the woman that she does not have that much money and later after negotiation she was told to pay Rs 2.5 Lakh to the complaint. Rs 50,000 of the amount was supposed to be paid to the social worker. The wife did not want to pay the amount so she approached the police and lodged a complaint, as per the officials.

According to reports, the police started verification of the accused persons and laid a trap for them. They were allegedly caught red-handed while accepting the money. Ravindra Patil, senior police inspector of NRI Coastal police station said, "We arrested all the five accused and booked them under section 188 (extortion) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code."
