A Lieutenant Colonel posted to the Indian army in Uttarakhand's Dehradun has been arrested for murdering a Nepali woman whom he had met at a dance bar in West Bengal’s Siliguri.

The woman’s body was recovered by the Raipur police station after receiving information from Gram Pradhan Sauda Siroli, who found the woman’s lifeless body in a suspicious condition in Sirwal Garh locality on Monday at 7 a.m.

The accused, identified as 42-year-old Ramendu Upadhyay, was arrested from his residence at Panditwari Prem Nagar. He confessed to the crime during police interrogation.Police officials added that they solved the murder within 24 hours of finding the deceased's body.

According to the police investigation, the 30-year-old woman was a native of Nepal, lived in Siliguri, and worked as a bar dancer. The accused posted at Clement Town cantonment area reportedly murdered the woman with whom he was involved in an extramarital affair after she began pressuring him to marry her.

The deceased woman was identified as Shreya Sharma, whom Upadhyay had met at a dance bar in Siliguri when he was posted there. They had been involved in an extramarital affair for three years. When he was transferred to Dehradun, he brought Sharma along with him to the hill station and rented a flat for her.

On Saturday, Upadhyay consumed alcohol with Sharma at a club on Rajpur Road and then offered to take her on a long-night drive, to which she agreed.

However, on reaching Tano Road, which is an isolated area on the outskirts of the city, around 1.30 am, the accused parked the car and attacked the woman on the head with a hammer. He hit her repeatedly until she died. After killing her, the accused poured toilet cleaner on her face to make her face unrecognisable and dumped her body on the roadside before driving away.

Police have recovered the hammer, the murder weapon used to commit the crime. The police also said they pound injury marks on the fore and back of the deceased woman’s head. A case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused.
