Kerala: 21-Year-Old Dies By Suicide After Complaining Against Domestic Abuse

A 21-year-old woman died by suicide after she was allegedly mistreated by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Aluva in a domestic violence case against her husband and his family. Reportedly the deceased wrote in her last letter goodbye to the family and that action needs to be taken against the officer.

The law student, Mofiya Parveen, who was a resident of Edayapuram near Aluva, a suburb of Kochi, Kerala, died by suicide on Monday night. The deceased had registered a complaint against her husband at the Aluva Police Station. The charges were domestic violence and mental torture.

According to media reports, the letter was addressed to the deceased's father and read, "Pappa, sorry. Please forgive me. You were right. He is not a genuine person. He portrayed me as a mentally ill person. I can't bear this pain anymore. Pappa, my soul will be here. Action will be initiated against the CI."

According to a report by The New Indian Express, the reason for this action was that the couple had gone to the police station for interrogation. During that period, the deceased had allegedly slapped the accused which angered the police officer, who then started treating her as the accused. According to the media copy, this might have been the reason behind the drastic step.

Mofiya had met her husband through a social media platform and then they got married. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Karthik has said that Aluva DYSP will be heading an investigating team against the officer who has been accused. On the basis of that report, action will be taken against the SHO.

Domestic Violence in India

According to the National Commission of Women data of 2020 titled "Nature-Wise Report Of The Complaints Received By NCW In The Year: 2020",  the number of cases under the section "Protection Of Women Against Domestic Violence" is 5,297 of the total number of cases filed under 23 sections which are 23722.

In 2021 data by the NCW in the first eight months of the year, shows a jump of 46 percent rise in crime against women. Out of 19, 953 cases received by the commission, 4289 complaints were of domestic violence.

Plus, according to the data presented by the Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan for the last three years, 34 dowry deaths have taken place in the state, with not a single accused being convicted. According to the Kerala Police data on crime against women in 2021 till September, eight dowry deaths have been registered and 3252 cruelty by husband/ relative cases. The latter has increased by 545 cases from 2020 provisional data of 2707 cases.
