At 22, Sharukala Becomes Tamil Nadu’s Youngest Panchayat President

TN Youngest Panchayat President: Sharukala became the youngest panchayat president in Tamil Nadu, after her election from the Venkadampatti Panchayat, which is reserved for women, in the newly constituted Tenkasi district. She is aged 22.

Sharukala believes that the educated young can do more and much better than the others. She was elected in an election drive with two phases, that were held in Tamil Nadu’s nine newly-constituted districts. These were created recently after public demand and administrative convenience.

Who is Sharukala?

Sharukala is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Engineering from the Hindustan Institute of Technology in Coimbatore. She said that she was happy about this victory and is humbled by people reposing faith in her. She was among the five youngest candidates who contested the elections. She added that she wants more and more educated young people to enter politics at the local body level and believes that the educated young can do more and much better than others.

The young Panchayat president’s father, Ravi Subramanian, who is a farmer, had contested the elections for the post last time, but had been unsuccessful. When Sharukala was asked whether she would let him or any other male member take control of the responsibilities, she firmly replied that she would function independently, in consultation with the people.

She was also asked about her plans to shift to the assembly or the parliament in the future, but the  said that she has not thought anything about that.

In the rural local body elections in Tamil Nadu, DMK is currently leading in the number of votes.
