Arya Rajendran, a 21-year-old college student, who successfully contested for the recent civic polls, was formally elected as Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation mayor on Monday. She is a second-year B.Sc Maths student at All Saints College. With the new position in hand, she becomes the youngest mayor ever in India.

Rajendran, the daughter of Rajendran and Sreelatha, an electrician and LIC agent respectively, hails from a family that allegedly identifies as longtime supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Rajendran is most likely to be named by CPI(M) as head of the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation after the Left Democratic Front won 51 of its 100 wards in the recently held polls.

More About Arya Rajendran

Arya Rajendran became a CPM associate when she joined the party's children's collective Baalasangham in class 5. The youngest mayor-to-be did her schooling at Carmel Girls’ Higher Secondary School and is currently studying at the all-women All Saints College.

Rajendran, who is an activist of the Students Federation of India (SFI), is also the state president of Baalsangham. The young lady draws her inspiration from Kerala's Health Minister KK Shailaja. Furthermore, others in her inspiration list are veteran poet Sugathakumari and Malayalam writer K R Meera.

Expressing joy over her victory and her interest in politics, her father KM Rajendran said, "Our is a party family." Rajendran's mother is a LIC agent and her brother Aravind works in the Middle East after graduating as an automobile engineer.

Her family lives in a small house in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Rajendran's family has reportedly been a rock-solid support for her political career, never discouraging her participation in politics and neither her extensive travel across Kerala.
