Rupali Basu, CEO (eastern region) of Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, resigned from her post on Thursday. There were many instances of medical negligence and unethical practices at the hospital during her term. Basu filed her papers through email and fax and they were accepted by the hospital board.
“Rupali Basu has resigned and there will be a new leadership taking over with Rana Dasgupta as CEO with immediate effect," said the hospital spokesperson to The Telegraph. "A team from the group office, comprising senior-most officials, will be stationed in Kolkata to re-evaluate all processes. N. Sathyabhama, director of medical services (southern region) of the Apollo Group, will assume additional charge of this region to oversee all processes."
Basu, who has expertise in gynaecology and obstetrics, was also one of the first who ventured into health management or hospital administration as her career. She had been managing a few other private hospitals besides Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata.
There were reports of overbilling against the hospital, but the real controversy happened over the alleged inhuman behaviour from the hospital towards Howrah accident victim Sanjay Roy's family. Roy's family had reportedly been compelled to mortgage fixed deposit documents and property deeds to meet his hospital bills.
Then former transport minister Madan Mitra started targeting Basu for all mishaps at the hospital. At a recent public speech, West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee, had also pointed at private hospitals without taking Apollo’s name in particular.
On February 25, a probe was instituted by the health department to look into the charge filed against the hospital in the negligence case and the Phoolbagan police began investigation.
Following the controversy, Apollo Chennai officials had to fly to Kolkata to take tough decisions. After a series of board meetings, it was decided that there will be some leadership changes in the Kolkata board.
"Committing its responsibility of healthcare services to the people of Bengal and respecting the advice of CM Mamata Banerjee, the Apollo management is taking positive steps. It is also informed that Dr Rupali Basu has resigned,” said the hospital’s press statement, reported TOI.
