The healthcare sector in India, like most other industries has traditionally been male-dominated.  However in the recent years, many Indian women have done pioneering work in the medical field especially in pediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology. These women haven’t just changed the health industry; they have made way for many other bright women in the sector. SheThePeople.TV gives you four of these women:

 

Dr. SAVITRI SRIVASTAVA

Dr. Savitri Srivastava is the Director of Pediatric and Coingenital Heart Diseases, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi. And the reason she is on this list is because she was the first doctor in India to have performed the highly complex balloon mitral valvotomy procedure. She was also the first Doctor to initiate non-surgical management of Paediatric and Congenital Heart diseases in India.

 

Dr NANDINI MUNDKUR

A developmental paediatrician Dr. Mundkur has done pioneering work in the field of early detection and intervention services in children and she has managed to achieve great success in the field. She is also the Director of International Children’s Peace Council where she is involved in working for Social Emotional Learning programs for children across the country. Dr. Mundkur is also the founder of the Centre for Child Development and Disabilities.

Dr. INDIRA INDUJA

An Indian gynecologist, obstetrician and infertility specialist, Dr. Induja is one of the most celebrated doctors in our country. She delivered India's s first test tube baby and is also credited for developing an oocyte donation technique for menopausal and premature ovarian failure patients. She was also the first doctor to pioneer the Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) technique and was responsible for the birth of the first GIFT baby.

Dr. KAMINI RAO

Like Dr. Induja, Dr. Rao is also a pioneer in assisted reproduction in the country. The chairperson and medical director of BACC (Bangalore Assisted Conception Center), Dr Kamini was the first woman to deliver a SIFT baby and set up south India’s first semen bank. With 34 years of experience, Dr.Rao has been helping women with different issues related to fertility, and has proved to be a game-changer in the field.
