Anandiben Patel Adopts Girl

Former Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel is Madhya Pradesh's next Governor. She has replaced Om Prakash Kohli who has additional charge of MP Governor along with the office of Gujarat Governor.

“The President of India is pleased to appoint Smt. Anandiben Patel to be the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office,” announced the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Twitter.

Anandiben was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1994. In 1998, she became the education minister of Gujarat

  • She retained the portfolio after being re-elected in 2002 from Patan. In 2012, Patel shifted to Ghatlodia in Ahmedabad.
  • The BJP leader succeeded Narendra Modi as Gujarat CM after the 2014 parliamentary polls. She was the first woman chief minister of Gujarat. In 2016, she stepped down on the ground that she was completing 75 years. This was in keeping with the party’s tradition of age criterion.

  • In the recently held assembly polls in Gujarat, Anandiben did not contest, claiming her age to be the reason.
  • She has become the second BJP leader from the state to be appointed as Governor after Vajubhai Vala, currently Karnataka Governor.

"She is a daughter of a farmer, who went on to become the first woman chief minister of Gujarat and now the first woman governor from the state. This indeed is a moment of pride for Gujarat," BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya told ET.
It is heartening to see more and more women taking up leadership positions and proving their mettle in different fields.
