Nicole Kidman starrer horror-thriller The Others, which released in 2001, is all set to get a remake. Universal Pictures and Sentient Entertainment will back the reboot. Notably, The Others was declared a surprise hit back in 2001 after it earned $96.5 million domestically and $209.9 million worldwide with a $17 million budget. It is not known yet if Kidman will reprise her role in the remake.

There is no word on whether Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar, who directed the original horror classic, will helm the new movie as well. Additionally, as per Deadline, it is not clear yet if the remake will be a continuation/reinterpretation of the original storyline or follow an entirely new script.

Sentient executives Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin will co-produce the project alongside Aliwen Entertainment’s Lucas Akoskin. Executive producers for the remake include European football club Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo and FilmSharks CEO Guido Rud. Sara Scott, SVP Production, will oversee the project on Universal’s behalf.

The Others: A Beloved Horror Classic

The Others featured Nicole Kidman essaying the role of Grace Stewart. The movie shows Stewart as a single mother living in an old country house on one of the Channel Islands with her two children and three servants in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. The two children suffer from a rare disease that makes them photosensitive to light. Consequently, certain suspicious events lead Stewart to believe that ghosts or ‘others’ are haunting the house.

Besides Kidman, Fionnula Flanagan, Christopher Eccleston, Eric Sykes, Alakina Mann and James Bradley also starred in the original movie. The audience appreciated the film for its unexpected twists and turns. The Others became the first non-Spanish-language movie to bag the Best Film Award at Spain’s Goya Awards.
