One of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time, Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice', is back with a fresh new take on Netflix. The six-part limited series will be starring some stellar names: Emma Corrin (The Crown, Black Mirror), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), and Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown).
Corrin will take on the iconic role of Elizabeth Bennet, Lowden will take the role of Mr Darcy, and Colman is set to play the unforgettable Mrs Bennet.
A Classic Story, Retold For A New Generation
This new series is written by Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and will be directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper), who also executive produces alongside Corrin (marking her EP debut), Laura Lankester, Will Johnston, and Louise Mutter from Lookout Point. Lisa Osborne is on board as the producer of the series.
Netflix promises that the show will be “a faithful, classic adaptation of the novel,” with Alderton adding,
“Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it.”
She continued:
“Jane Austen’s 'Pride and Prejudice' is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count 'Pride and Prejudice' as their favourite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”
Emma Corrin As Lizzie Bennet
Emma Corrin shared their excitement over taking on the legendary role, calling it:
“A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honour. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”
First published in 1813, 'Pride and Prejudice' has never really gone out of style. Netflix has been diving into the world of Jane Austen for a while, as its 2022 adaptation of 'Persuasion' starred Dakota Johnson. This new 'Pride and Prejudice' series is shaping up to be another modern classic.
Mona Qureshi from Netflix said:
“We are delighted to be sharing this beloved British classic with our global audience. 'Pride and Prejudice' is the ultimate romantic comedy. Dolly’s fierce intelligence and enormous heart, twinned with her genuine love of the Austen novel means she is able to bring new insights, whilst celebrating all that the generations of fans hold so dear. The calibre of a cast led by Emma, Jack and Olivia is testament to this precious story being in the best possible hands with Euros Lyn and the team at Lookout Point at the helm.”
So yes, the Darcy-Lizzie tension, the sass of Mrs. Bennet, and all the dreamy Regency-era drama is coming back, and we can’t wait.
