A$AP Rocky and Rihanna at the 2023 Met Gala
The highly anticipated Met Gala 2025 is set to take place on May 5, 2025, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme, "Tailored for You," is inspired by the Costume Institute’s exhibition, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." The event will explore the evolution of Black menswear from 18th-century Europe to its global influence today, drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion.
Here’s What the Theme ‘Tailored for You’ Means
As per The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the showcase will “present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world.”
The gallery will feature archival garments, artworks, film excerpts, and more, highlighting how sartorial style shaped Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora.
About Black Dandyism
The exhibition draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Miller, Chair and Professor of Africana Studies at Columbia University’s Barnard College, will serve as guest curator, marking the first dedicated menswear exhibition in twenty years. The last men’s fashion-focused exhibit was "Braveheart: Men in Skirts" in 2003.
The concept of dandyism plays a crucial role in this exhibition. According to the Met, “Dandyism was initially imposed on Black men in 18th-century Europe as the Atlantic slave trade and an emerging culture of consumerism created a trend of fashionably dressed, or dandified, servants.” Over time, Black individuals used clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to redefine their identity and challenge social and political norms.
The Met further explains, "These narratives offer a history and description of Black dandyism as a discrete phenomenon that reflects broader issues of power and race in the Black diaspora."
What Will the 2025 Met Gala Dress Code Be?
The official Met Gala dress code for 2025 will be revealed closer to the event. However, the exhibition offers clues about the expected styles. Dandyism’s influence suggests sharp tailoring, bold patterns, extravagant accessories, and statement pieces.
Fashion icons like Dapper Dan, André Leon Talley, Prince, and Tyler, The Creator could serve as inspiration. The Met notes, “Dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities.”
