Filmmaker Karishma Kohli recently tied the knot with actor Mikhail Yawalkar in a beautiful and unique ceremony. Though a few glimpses from her wedding celebrations had gone viral last month, the official wedding video has now been shared on Instagram and is winning hearts online.
The video, posted by House On The Clouds, captures emotional and joyful moments from the ceremony. One standout moment included Karishma’s close friend, actor Katrina Kaif, who cheered for her during the ceremony. Katrina is seen shouting, “Kiss!” as the couple leaned in to seal their vows.
Although Karishma’s wedding festivities last month followed rich Indian traditions in line with her Sikh roots, she made a deeply personal choice to walk down the aisle in a white gown instead of the customary red lehenga.
Who Is Karishma Kohli? Filmmaker Who Made Vitiligo a Part of Her Glow
Speaking to Vogue, she shared, “I’m Sikh, but ever since I can remember, I visualised myself in a white gown and not a red lehenga for my wedding. When I was younger, the version of my dream gown was very different. But when I got my first patch of vitiligo, it changed.”
Karishma first noticed patches of vitiligo on her lip and chest when she turned 30. Over the next decade, she went through several treatments, from painful stem-cell therapy and strict diets to long-term steroid use, in hopes of reversing the autoimmune condition. But a major turning point came during the pandemic.
Her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and one of the medicines prescribed to her was the same one Karishma had been taking to manage her vitiligo. That moment made her stop and rethink everything. She said, “I was shocked and decided to stop taking it and work towards loving her skin.”
She added, “When it first started, I tried so hard to suppress it and to hide it from the world. I stopped wearing open shoes or sleeveless clothes and had so many side effects from the steroids. It’s been a long road to becoming comfortable in this new skin–literally! When it came to choosing a wedding gown, though, I wanted something that would work with this autoimmune condition and also feel right for my emotions and visuals.”
Karishma also revealed how she met her now-husband. During the 2020 lockdown, she was grieving the loss of her mother and staying in Goa when a friend pushed her to meet Mikhail. Though she wasn’t looking for a relationship, they ended up having dinner with friends. Two days later, Mikhail asked her out for coffee.
The connection was instant, and their love story took shape quietly. Mikhail proposed to Karishma in November 2024 during a trip to Bangkok, where they attended a concert of their favourite French band, AIR.
Karishma Kohli is best known for her work behind the camera in acclaimed projects like Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and The Fame Game. Her partner, Mikhail Yawalkar, has appeared in films such as Mardaani, Jai Gangaajal, Qaidi Band, Yeh Ballet, and Yodha.
