Police have identified the accused as Anish and arrested him. The police said that Anish has admitted to the crime and revealed his motive for killing his senior colleague.

Anish had stated that senior surveyor Mahesh at the Survey of India Defence Officer Complex was not returning the Rs. 9 lakhs he borrowed. He was also harassing Anish’s girlfriend.

On August 28, Anish took leave from work and began planning for the murder. He visited Lajpat Nagar and South Extension markets, where he had purchased items needed to commit the murder and cover up the crime scene. This included a six-foot polythene cover.

Anish had asked Mahesh to come over. Around noon, when senior officer Mahesh reached Anish’s government accommodation in RK Piram Sector 2, he allegedly used a pipe wrench to strike a fatal blow on Mahes’ head.

He then fled the scene and returned to his home in Sonipat. He returned the next day, dug a pit about 1.5 feet deep, and buried the boy. He also used cement to cover the pit.

The case came to light after Mahesh’s brother filed a missing persons report after being unable to reach him. The police recovered Mahesh’s body on September 2. Further details on the case are awaited.

Revenge Is Toxic Masculinity Not Heroism

Men taking "revenge" for their girlfriend or spouse is rather portrayed as a heroic act by the media, leading to an increase in the number of such crimes. A girl is harassed; she tells her boyfriend or husband, and he immediately takes up violence in his hands to seek justice for his woman. This toxic masculinity is often confused with heroism.

Young men, consuming this violent template from the media, take it on themselves to be the "hero," the "saviour," "the white knight" who comes to the rescue of his woman. However, violence is not the way to combat harassment, for it’ll only lead to further complexities.

Hopefully, stringent laws for crimes against women, swift legal action, and socially responsible portrayal of sensitive issues by the media will pave the way for a change in social mindset.
