Washington is pulling all stops to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted Modi at the White House yesterday, June 21, for a private dinner. They were joined by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his US counterpart Jake Sullivan for the same.
As the official gifts, the Prime Minister gave a handcrafted sandalwood box to Joe Biden, and a 7.5-carat eco-friendly green diamond to the First Lady. The sandalwood box gifted to President Biden, who turns 81 in November, contains a silver idol of Lord Ganesha, an oil lamp and 'Das Danam'.
"Das Danam" signifies donations made when a person becomes 'Drishta Sahasrachandro' or the one who has seen one thousand full moons after completing the age of 80 years and eight months, according to NDTV.
Meanwhile, Modi received a handmade, antique American book galley from the early 20th Century from the Bidens.
On his Day 2 schedule of his state visit, he delivered an address to the US Congress and a state dinner.
The constitution of both countries begins with the "three words -We the People- as President Biden just mentioned", said Modi, who is on his first state visit to the US.
"Both nations feel pride in our diversity... For global good, world peace and stability, we are committed to working together," the Prime Minister said.
Indian Industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Anand Mahindra were among the guests attending the state dinner hosted by Biden at the White House.
Prominent Indian-origin industry executives, Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella and Indra Nooyi, besides Apple CEO Tim Cook were also on the guest list.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and US Envoy to India Eric Garcetti were also there.
Indian-origin US representatives Ro Khanna and Raja Krishnamoorthi, Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath and fashion designer Ralph Lauren were among the other guests at the state dinner.
