Talk show host Megyn Kelly recently raised eyebrows after she made a controversial remark about women working in the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). While talking about the devastating California wildfires on her podcast, she said, "The last thing I want to see if I am in a burning building is A) a woman and B) an obese woman." The Conservative firebrand hit out at the LAFD's diversity, equality, and inclusion initiatives, ridiculing the "out-of-shape" and "lesbian" women rescuing people trapped by the deadly wildfires.

Megyn Kelly's Sexist Comment

In a recent podcast episode, Megyn Kelly criticised female leadership in the LAFD, "I believe I speak for all females in Los Angeles when I say, we want a strong man to rescue us. That’s what we want. Do we ask for too much?” Notably, there are only three women in the LAFD’s 14-person leadership team.

The three women in LAFD leadership are Training and Support Bureau Commander Jaime Brown, Deputy Chief in Equity and Human Resources Bureau Kristine Larson, and Kristin Crowley, a 22-year veteran and transgender woman; the department’s first LGBTQ fire chief. Kelly remarked, "These three women who are all at the top there … I mean honestly, I’m not trying to be mean, but they’re obese. These are overweight, out-of-shape women."

Kelly said, "Who takes comfort in ‘I’m going to die, but it’s in the presence of an obese lesbian’?" She also claimed that this is one place she’d "actually support" transgender women replacing biological ones. "Let’s get the fake women who want to invade our sports and redirect them to the fire department."

Amid the California wildfires, another video related to the LAFD has stirred controversy; however, this time, it is of Kristine Larson, Deputy Chief of Equity and Human Resources Bureau. In a 2019 video that has recently resurfaced, she spoke about the LAFD making way for more women and people of different body types.

Larson claimed that people want to be saved by firefighters to whom they can "relate". However, while talking about the capability of female firefighters in rescuing male victims, she remarked, "He got himself in the wrong place if I have to carry him out of a fire." This has led to calls for Larson to be dismissed from the LAFD.
