Celebrity lookalike contests are a rage in the West. In recent weeks, pop culture doppelgangers have descended on parks and public squares from New York to San Francisco to London to battle it out for the coveted title, $50 prize and bragging rights. Banking on a similar theme, Delhi-based cinephile community @filmsfromunderground realised the potential and hosted an Abhay Deol lookalike contest in the capital's Deer Park.
Surprisingly, a lot of people turned up for the contest. A man turned up in a black ‘wifebeater’, emulating Abhay's latest thirst traps on Instagram. Another person sported a black eye, a callback to one of Abhay's most viral moments when he turned up to an awards show after taking a beating from a music company.
Watch the turnout of the event
In the end, a guy in a yellow sweater and a messy mullet took the crown. The competition was intense with the candidates getting streamlined from top 10 to top 5 to the ultimate winner.
The contest followed lots of "tasks" which embodied the spirit of who would be the closest we could get to an Abhay Deol doppleganger. The winner got a sum of Rs 501, three film screening tickets and two packs of chewing gum. The winner, as shared on the Internet, is a young student interested in theatre.
Internet's Reaction
The Internet appreciated this community-fostering activity happening in the country. Such fun and silly activities can be stress busters and a good opportunity to get off our phones and interact with people.
The internet was divided in their opinions, with people sharing how anyone hardly looked like the actual Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara star. "Do people not understand the meaning of lookalike", a user shared their frustration. One user, in an optimistic tone, noted how this was the case of peak confidence of Delhi people fueling the popular stereotypes.
More Upcoming Contests
Some users started to give ideas for potential more lookalike contests to have: Rahul Gandhi, Arpit Bala, etc. Joining the spirit, another lookalike contest is happening in Delhi on December 24 for actor, Arjun Rampal. The internet users seemed excited to meet the closest they could get to witness the actor in real life. A user shared that there should be a lookalike contest of Deepika Padukone's superhit film, Piku, fostering a sense of womanhood and empowerment.
