In disasters like the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and 7.5-magnitude aftershock that struck Syria and Turkey on February 6, 2023, international cooperation on satellite imaging plays a crucial role in the rescue and recovery efforts.

Visuals showed the Syrian girl, Mariam, shielding her younger brother, Ilaaf, by keeping her hand on his head. She could be seen gently stroking her younger brother’s hair as they lie squashed together.

A newborn, whose umbilical cord was still tied to her mother, was rescued after she was delivered under the earthquake rubble in Syria. Her mother passed away after giving birth. 

Many buildings have collapsed, at least 2,000 people are thought to have died across the two countries, and there are reports of damage to gas pipelines leading to fires.

 A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria early on 6 February, Monday, killing hundreds of people. The tremors of leveling buildings were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus and Egypt.
