 A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria early on 6 February, Monday, killing hundreds of people. The tremors of leveling buildings were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus and Egypt.

Turkey is experiencing the biggest earthquake in a century. The head of Syria's National Earthquake Centre, Raed Ahmed in a statement said that this was historically the biggest earthquake recorded in the history of the centre.

  • The earthquake hit the centred north of the city of Gaziantep about 90 kilometers (60 miles) from the Syrian border. 
  •  Over 1200 dead after powerful catastrophic earthquake hit Turkey and Syria and the death toll is still scaling.
  •  Dozens of buildings have collapsed and people are trapped under the debris with several hundred injured. A famous mosque dating back to the 13th century partially collapsed in the province of Maltaya, and also a 14-story building with 28 apartments collapsed.
  • Entire sections in a region filled with millions of refugees from the Syrian civil war and other conflicts were hit by an earthquake. Turkey witnessed so far more fatal casualties, where 284 people are killed so far. 
  • Over 2,300 people are injured and that search and rescue work has been in action in several major cities.
  • Worst is currently Turkey is having winter, the rescue was hampered by a winter blizzard as major roads were covered in ice and snow.
  • Turkey's AFAD emergencies service centre marked the quake's magnitude at 7.4 with additions of over 40 aftershocks.
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan conveyed his sympathies and urged national unity. He tweeted, "We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage."
  • The Turkish region of Duzce suffered a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1999 with 17,000 people being killed. The quake hit Elazig in January 2020, killing more than 40 people.
