As we come to terms with the recent acid attack case in Delhi’s Dwarka area, it’s important to remember that this horrific attack is not the first to shock the nation.

As a society, we should be mulling over why are acid attacks still reported so rampantly despite the ban on the over-the-counter sale of acid ordered by the Supreme Court?

Two accused were charged under Indian Penal Code sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by acid).

The Mayor, Junaid Azim Mattu visited the survivor at the Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital where is she is undergoing treatment after suffering serious injuries.

The investigating official from Shanti Nagar police station said that other than the attack, the accused also abused the survivor’s father and damaged his scooter. 

The punishment for acid attacks is mentioned under section 326A of the Indian Penal Code, which mentions a minimum of 10 years of imprisonment. 

Rimsha’s family had approached the police a few months ago after Zeeshan forcibly tried to take the deceased woman to his home.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau data between 2014 and 2018, there have been 1,483 victims of acid attacks in the country. This when over the counter sale of acid was banned in 2013.
