Mary Kom will compete in the women’s 51kg category for the Asian Boxing Championships after she defeated Altantsetseg with a score of 4-1 in the semi-finals. Kom will be competing against the two-time world champion from Kazakhstan, Nazym Kyzaibay.

India has secured 15 medals in the Asian Boxing Championship this year, beating their last record of winning 13 medals in the 2019 Asian Championships in Bangkok.

The 38-year-old boxer and six-time world champion is aiming to win her sixth medal at the Asian Boxing Championships. So far, she has won one silver medal and five gold medals at the championships.

Kom and other Olympic-bound female boxers moved to Pune after the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium was forced to shut down due to a COVID-19 outbreak. She said that she was “eager to compete” and added that there “has hardly been any training because of the pandemic”. Kom said she “desperately” needed the Asian Boxing Championships to assess herself before the Tokyo Olympics.

Before the commencement of the Asian Boxing Championship, Kom said that “I will give my best, whether it would be enough to get a medal is something that only time will tell”.

Mary Kom had announced that the Tokyo Olympics would be her final Olympics and said that her age factored into the decision. Kom said that “Tokyo will be my last Olympics, age matters here. I’m 38 now, going on 39.”

Kom, who has been boxing for 20 years said that “I want more girls to come out and fight. I hope there are no restrictions on them to come out and fight for themselves and their country.”

The Asian Championship was initially supposed to be held in India but was moved to Dubai as COVID-19 cases increased in the country and international travel was restricted.
