Who is Shefali Juneja? Shefali Juneja became the chairperson of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Aviation Security Committee on Friday, September 17.

Juneja is the first woman to hold this position. This responsibility has been given to India after a break of 12 long years.

The ICAO Council is located in Montreal, Canada. It recommends practices which concern air navigation, its infrastructure, flight inspection and prevention of unlawful interference. Further, it looks after the procedures for crossing borders. It also defines protocols for the investigation of air accidents followed by transport safety authorities.

Who is Shefali Juneja? Five things we know about her

  1. Shefali Juneja is India's representative in ICAO. From 2012 to 2019, she served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation that deals with International Agreements. Juneja served as the chief bilateral air services negotiator for India for six years. She helped in the transformation of the bilateral air service negotiations by implementing Open Skies according to the 2016 National Civil Aviation Policy.
  2. She was also the Board of Director in Air India group companies, Air India Express and Alliance Air. Before joining the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Juneja served on various semi-judicial positions as well as challenging and sensitive assignments. She was also a part of financial and administrative positions in the government as a civil servant, belonging to the 1992 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax Cadre).
  3. Juneja was appointed as the representative of her country in the council for a period of three years. She earned the position in 2019, replacing Alok Shekhar, senior IAS officer.
  4. She attended Delhi University's St. Stephen's College and Lady Shri Ram College.
  5. June 24, 2021 marked the 36th anniversary of the tragic Air India Flight 182 bombing that killed 329 people. The aircraft took off from Montreal. Juneja paid homage to everyone who lost their lives along with a man who lost his two daughters and a woman who lost her husband.
