Wankhede had also issued a statement and said: "I would like to express that my father Sh. Dnyandev Kachruji Wankhede retire {as Senior Police Inspector of State Excise Department, Pune on 30.06.2007. My father is a Hindu and my mother Late Mrs. Zaheeda was a Muslim.”
“I belong to a composite, multi-religious and secular family in true Indian tradition and I am proud of my heritage. Further, I married Dr. Shabana Qureshi in 2006 in a civil marriage ceremony under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Both of us divorced mutually through Civil Court under the Special Marriage Act in the year 2016. Later in the year 2017, I married Shiimati Kranti Dinanath Redkar,” Sameer Wankhede had said.
Wankhede addressed Malik's allegations of extortion and phone tapping against her husband on October 26, saying, "My husband is not wrong. We will not tolerate this."
She further said that her husband was definitely not targeting Bollywood. "He goes to Goa to carry out operations every month, there are no celebrities in Goa, he deals with hard criminals," she said, adding, "Why all this is happening when one certain person is interested in this case?" She also asked why have no extortion charges been levelled against him in any other case so far? "This is the first time such allegations have been made in his 15 years of service," she added, as reported by India Today.
