Tanwar's character Sheel is bent on exacting revenge for her disabled daughter's death, but for that to happen she must first find out what exactly happened to her child. As Sheel keeps digging, she ends up in the dark and dirty world of drugs, mafia lords and corruption. The 47-year-old grieving mother attempts to unravel the truth behind her daughter's death as she is devoured into the underworld crime and dirty politics of the influential people.

The trailer of the show follows not shows Sheel investigating her daughter's death, but also resorting to violence and taking the law into her hands as and when the situation arises. While the story has been narrated quite many times in cinema through similar lenses, Sakshi Tanwar promises that Mai has a different perspective to offer which makes it unique, when compared to Raveena Tandon's Maatr and Sridevi's Mom. Commenting on how Mai is different from other projects along the same lines, Tanwar said, "The approach is very real and we have presented the story in a very organic manner. The circumstances are very dramatic but the characters aren’t. I think that sets us apart from any other genre. All the characters in the story are very ordinary people, who are put under extraordinary situations. The style of storytelling, its presentation, and the performances are very real. This time the story is being told in a very raw form."
