Biden nominates Sarala Vidya Nagala as Federal Judge: President of the United States Joe Biden has nominated Sarala Vidya Nagala, an India-American civil rights attorney as a federal judge in the State of Connecticut. Currently, Nagala's nomination is pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The nomination came a day after another Indian-American Neera Tanden was chosen as a senior adviser to Biden at the White House. After the start of his term as the 46th President of the United States, Biden has nominated several Indian origin women for significant leadership roles. Along with Nagala, four other new candidates have been nominated for the federal branch and two for District of Columbia courts.

Here are 10 things we know about Sarala Vidya Nagala nomination:

1. If the nomination gets confirmed by the Senate, Sarala Vidya Nagala, who is a federal prosecutor, would become the first judge of South Asian descent to serve on the District Court for the District of Connecticut.

2. Since 2017, Nagala has been serving as the Deputy Chief of the Major Crimes Unit in the US Attorney's Office in the District of Connecticut.

3. The White House talked about the nominations in a statement on Tuesday and said that all of the candidates are "extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and US Constitution".

4. Nagala  received her degree in Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in 2005.

5. She got her Juris Doctor (undergraduate law degree in the US) in 2008 from the UC Berkeley School of Law.

6. Nagala began her career for the Ninth Circuit from 2008 to 2009 as a law clerk for Judge Susan Graber on the US Court of Appeals.

7. She was also an associate at Munger, Tolles & Olson in San Francisco, California from 2009 to 2012.

8. In 2012, she joined the US Attorney's Office and has also served in several leadership roles which include being a Hate Crimes Coordinator.

9. Previously, President Joe Biden promised to ensure that the nation's courts would reflect the diversity that is one of the greatest assets of a country.

10. The nominations of Nagala and the others for the federal bench and District of Columbia courts is seen as one of the steps towards achieving the goal.
