Deepika Padukone India on the cusp of greatness, saree at cannes
India is the official "country of honour" at the Cannes 2022 Film Festival this year. The opening ceremony has begun with Deepika Padukone gracing it as a part of the eight-member jury at the festival this year. Decked up in a sequined gold and black Sabyasachi saree, she said in her speech, "It's such a huge honour. It's not something that our country has seen very often. So when we are given the opportunity, we should take it with a lot of humility & gratitude."

"While it does feel like a personal victory, it also feels like a slightly larger victory for the South Asian community… We can literally count on our fingertips the number of times anyone from India has been on the jury or has had the opportunity to represent the country at a platform such as this," the actor said in an interview.

Other jury members

Deepika Padukone, famous for films like Piku and Padmaavat, will be sitting on the jury along with French actor Vincent Lindon, the president, as well as English actor-filmmaker Rebecca Hall, Swedish actor Noomi Rapace, French filmmaker-actor Ladj Ly, Italian actor-director Jasmine Trinca, American filmmaker Jeff Nichols, director-screenwriter Joachim Trier from Norway and Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. As part of the jury, she will help in selecting the winner for the coveted Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony scheduled on May 28.

Besides Deepika, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Tamannaah Bhatia, and AR Rahman are other Indian celebrities attending the event.

Deepika isn't the first Indian to be a part of Cannes jury. Late Mrinal Sen, director Mira Nair,  author Arundhati Roy, Shekhar Kapur, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Nandita Das, Sharmila Tagore, and Vidya Balan have also been a part of the jury in the past.

Deepika Padukone has been attending Cannes regularly for the last few years representing make-up giant L'Oreal at the film festival. From Prabal Gurung to Peter Dundas, she has worn multiple designers so far.
