Baba Ka Dhaba Owner Tried to Kill Himself says Delhi Police

Baba Ka Dhaba Owner suicide attempt: Kanta Prasad, the owner of the now famous Baba ka Dhaba reportedly tried to attempt suicide. Early police reports suggest he was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. The 80-year-old had been feeling depressed last few days as per his wife's account to the Delhi police.

Kanta Prasad and his wife's Baba Ka Dhaba received nationwide fame  at the peak of the pandemic after a video showing their struggles to sell dhaba food during the COVID lockdown, went viral. The couple were in tears, in a video posted by an Instagrammer names Gaurav Wasan, talking of the difficulties to earn during a nationwide lockdown. Social media poured support and money to help the couple sustain their business after the video was widely circulated.

Recently the dhaba owner is said to have returned to his original spot after trying out a restaurant format supported by the funds he had raised.

Prasad and his wife Badaami Devi, recently went back to running their old eatery after their restaurant failed to run successfully.

“On an investment of Rs 1 lakh, we only earned Rs 35,000, that’s why shut it. I’m happy to run my old eatery as customer footfall is good here,” said Kanta Prasad, the owner of Baba Ka Dhaba.

Prasad's wife Badami Devi told ANI,  "I don't know anything, I don't know what did he eat. I had not seen. He fell unconscious, I was sitting at the dhaba. I brought him here. Doctor has not told us anything so far. I don't know what was going on in his mind."

Delhi-based YouTuber Gaurav Wasan was accused in October last year of allegedly cheating Prasad and his wife. In November 2020, he was booked by Delhi Police for allegedly withdrawing donation funds raised (via crowdfunding) for Kanta Prasad, based on the eatery owner's complaint. Read more on that here.

However, this year Prasad went on to apologise to Wasan for the misunderstanding that led to his police complaint.

Wasan too chose to forgive the old couple, saying, "All is well that ends well. The person who forgives is a bigger person than who makes a mistake - That's what my parents have taught me."
