Women Commuters In Train Waiting List To Get Unutilized Berths
Are you a woman travelling solo or travelling with a group of women? There is some good news for you. Unutilised train berths under women’s quota will be allotted to women regardless of their waiting list number.
The Railway Board issued an order to Southern Railway stating that six berths would be earmarked for women passengers in every sleeper class coach regardless of age.
The Indian Railways took the decision after it found that berths earmarked under women’s quota went under-utilised during night travels. In fact, they were allotted to general wait-listed passengers
“These six berths will be open for woman passengers travelling alone and for groups of women passengers in a ticket (with single PNR). If the six berths are not availed till preparation of the first chart, the berths will be released to wait-listed single woman passengers and groups of women passengers.”
“The next preference would be given to senior citizens,” reads the order.
The Indian Railways took the decision after it found that berths earmarked under women’s quota went under-utilised during night travels. In fact, they were allotted to general wait-listed passengers.
The new step would increase the chances of single woman passengers and women travellers with single ticket getting confirmed berths.
However, women travelling along with men will not get these berths.
For the elderly
Also, to reduce the ordeal of elderly people climbing to upper berths, six lower berths per coach in sleeper class and three lower berths per coach in air-conditioned 3-tier (3AC) and air-conditioned 2-tier (2AC) classes have been earmarked for citizens, female passengers above 45 years of age and pregnant women when travelling alone.
