The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) turned pink to honour Jane McGrath on Saturday. As the tradition has been, the SCG celebrates Jane Mcgrath day on the third test day of the first match played at the stadium, his time it was during India vs Australia Pink test series. This year, the SCG celebrated Jane McGrath for the 13th time where funds were raised for the McGrath Foundation and spectators donned pink colour to extend their support.

The McGrath Foundations aims to raise awareness about breast cancer among young girls and also raise funds to provide aid to breast cancer patients. This foundation was started by Jane McGrath, wife of cricketer Glenn McGrath, who suffered from breast cancer for many years and then died because of it.

Here is what we know of Glenn McGrath:

  • Born in England, Jane McGrath worked most of her life as a flight attendant for Virgin Atlantic.
  • She married Glenn McGrath in 1999 and had two children with him.
  • She soon became a citizen of Australia and founded the McGrath Foundation with her husband to spread awareness about breast cancer and helping nurses and patients dealing with the disease.
  • She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 and managed to fight it. After cancer surfaced for the second time, her health started deteriorating even after the cancer was removed. She passed away in 2008 aged 42.
  • The foundation she co-founded with her husband, McGrath Foundation has been able to employ more than a hundred nurses who solely work with patients with breast cancer. It has also raised funds to help several women fight with the dangerous disease.
  • Former Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard donated about $18.5 million from the Australian government to the McGrath Foundation to help the charitable organisation achieve its goals.

The 13th Jane McGrath day during the Pink Test was also attended by Alison Szwajcer, the breast cancer nurse in Australia. She also served as a nurse to Jane McGrath during her battle with the disease. According to Glenn McGrath, Szwajcer had a huge impact on his family.
