Actor-turned-BJP MP, Suresh Gopi handed over the Guava sapling to the PM during his recent visit. Gopi who has also been a playback singer and television presenter is a nominated member in the Rajya Sabha. The student had earlier this week handed over the sapling to the MP during his visit to Gandhi Bhavan in Pathanapuram, who in turn gave it to the PM.

Who is Kerala Girl Jayalakshmi?

Jayalakshmi is an aspiring girl farmer who wants to advocate organic farming. She hails from the Pathanamthitta district of the state. Gopi took to social media and wrote, "Nurtured by a thoughtful young girl in a courtyard of Kulanada, a village in Pathanamthitta, all set to bloom in the residence of the Indian Prime Minister".

Jayalakshmi is the recipient of Karshaka Thilakam Award. It was given by the state government to the best student (female) for developing and maintaining an organic farm in her home courtyard. The state gives these annual awards for comprehensive farming practices. Organic farming is the cultivation without the application of chemical fertilisers, synthetic pesticides, growth hormones and antibiotics.

Jayalakshmi is very happy that the sapling has reached the PM and that she has learnt it via the social media posts. She said she had never ever expected that her gift would reach the prime minister.

With the export potential of organic products increasing across the globe organic farming is an emerging area in the country.  Conventionally grown foods are considered to have adverse health effects due higher pesticide residue, hormones, etc and thus there is a food safety concern. The demand for organically grown foods has increased over the years due to their higher ">health benefits.
