K Chitra's death was a suicide with no foul play involved, the Chennai police said quoting doctors who performed a postmortem on the late video jockey and Tamil actress' body. The police confirmed the news on Thursday, according to reports, a day after the 29-year-old was found dead in her hotel room. Known for playing Mullai in the hit serial Pandian Stores, a Tamil language drama, VJ Chitra will reportedly be cremated today.

According to Times Of India, The postmortem was conducted in Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai by two doctors on Thursday in the presence of police. The body was later handed to her family. Chitra's mother, Vijaya Kamaraj, had earlier alleged that her daughter didn't die by suicide but had been killed by her son-in-law, Hemnath. Chitra's father had reportedly filed a police complaint asking for a probe into his daughter's death.

Background on VJ Chitra's death

VJ Chitra was found hanging at a five-star hotel room in Nazarethpettai on December 9, where she was staying with her husband Hemnath, a businessman. According to a news report by The News Minute, Chitra’s family members had alleged foul play in her death, with the police questioning her husband and the hotel employees who helped him open the door when her body was found.

The young actress was reportedly shooting at EVP film city till late night on Wednesday, December 9. In his earlier statement, Hemnath told police that Chitra had returned to her hotel room at around 2:30 am on Wednesday. He said that she went for a bath soon after returning from the shoot. However, seeing that she didn’t come out for a long time, Hemnath started knocking at the door. When she did not respond, he called the hotel staff who used a duplicate key to open the door, and reportedly found the actor hanging from a ceiling fan.

According to multiple reports, VJ Chitra had been dealing with depression. Her last social media post was from late Tuesday night, in which she had shared a picture of herself from a photoshoot. Her death invited condolences from across the South Indian entertainment industry. Read them here.

Who was VJ Chitra?

Chitra Kamaraj, commonly known as VJ Chitra, was a Tamil television actress and video jockey. She was reportedly engaged to Hemnath and the couple had a registered marriage two months ago. She was found hanging in her hotel room in Chennai on December 9, where she had been staying with her husband. On the work front, Chitra had featured in serials like Saravanan Meenatchi, Velunachi, Darling Darling, Mannan Magal and Chinna Papa Periya Papa, to name a few. She also took part as a contestant on the danceshow Jodi Fun Unlimited.
