Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House Press secretary, was denied service at a restaurant in Virginia as she works with US President Donald Trump. She has become the latest official to experience a brusque reception in a public setting, reported Indian Express.

Trump’s Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, had to cut short a working dinner earlier this week. She was at a Mexican restaurant in Washington, outside which the protesters were shouting “Shame!” till the time she left.

According to a report by New York Post, few days ago, Stephen Miller, Trump's key adviser on immigration, was called “a fascist,” by a man at a Mexican restaurant in the city.

Buzz on Social Media

Sanders took to Twitter to share the incident. She said that the owner asked her to “leave because I work for (at)POTUS and I politely left”. Sanders added, “I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so.”

In about an hour, her tweet generated about 22,000 replies.

Sanders' father, former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, tweeted, “Bigotry. On the menu at Red Hen Restaurant in Lexington VA. Or you can ask for the 'Hate Plate' and appetizers are 'small plates for small minds.'"

His tweet generated 2,000 replies in just about 30 minutes.

A responder from Los Angeles, On Yelp, tweeted, “Don’t eat here if you’re a Republican, wearing a MAGA hat or a patriot.”

While many others condemned what the restaurant owner did, many came out in her support too.

A student from Colorado said, “12/10 would recommend. Bonus: this place is run by management who stuck up for their beliefs and who are true Americans. THANK YOU!!!!”

Former Press secretary for President George W. Bush, Ari Fleischer, also tweeted, “I guess we’re heading into an America with Democrat-only restaurants, which will lead to Republican-only restaurants. Do the fools who threw Sarah out, and the people who cheer them on, really want us to be that kind of country?”

What did the owner say?

The owner of the restaurant gave various reasons as to why she refused service to the official. She said that she was concerned for several of her employees who were gay and knew that Sanders had defended Trump's desire to bar transgender people from the military.

According to a report by The Washington Post, the restaurant’s co-owner Stephanie Wilkinson was called by her employers to report about Sanders' arrival. She revealed that when she asked the staff that at the most she could only ask her to leave, they agreed. Wilkinson then privately conveyed this to Sanders.

In the last presidential elections which were held in 2016, Lexington in Virginia, where the restaurant is located, sided with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Local Reactions

A local business owner, Tom Lomax showed his support and brought flowers to the restaurant. In a report by IE, he said, "We support our own here, great little community we have.”

Dave Kurtz, living near the Red Hen, came to the restaurant as a Trump supporter. He said, “I want to see why they would do that.” He also added that after this incident, he doubts that he will eat at the restaurant now.
