2003 Extortion Case

Meanwhile, Sunanda Shetty is also entangled in an extortion case along with Shilpa Shetty's personal secretary Bhupender Singh Sachdev. The duo is still facing charges levelled by Surat-based industrialist Pankaj Agrawal who accused them of criminal intimidation through Fazlur-Rehman, who reportedly, is connected to the mafia.

Shetty in 1998 had shot an advertisement for his saree store which was supposed to air for a year but ran for four years instead. Shetty's parents had reportedly demanded Agrawal pay extra money for the deal was only supposed to be for one year. Charges were framed against Sunanda in the Surat court in October 2019.

Shilpa Shetty since the beginning has maintained that her parents have always been law-abiding citizens who were made to look like criminals through this extortion case.  At the time when controversy had erupted said, "Media has gone ballistic and blown this incident out of proportion, without caring about the truth. It has been a harrowing experience for my parents and they have been subjected to harassment by the press. They have run from pillar to post to prove their innocence. Despite being the aggrieved party, we are being termed the aggressors, manipulators, and villains." She also added, "My humble plea, with folded hands to the press and all those reading this, is please don't convict us before the court's verdict. Please put things in perspective. All I want is a little fairness."

Currently, the Raj Kundra Adult film controversy case is being heard in court.
