Shahdara Rape Assault Survivor's Younger Sister Was Also Molested, FIR Registered Now

In the case of gangrape, assault and public humiliation of a 20-year-old woman in the capital city of India, New Delhi, the survivor's younger sister has claimed that she was molested and assaulted too in the Shahdara area. The police have already arrested a few of the accused persons in the first case and filed a complaint against an accused in the sister's case as well.

A week after the crime against the survivor came to light and the Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal sent a notice to the Delhi police, the survivor's sister came forward with a new allegation. The survivor's sister said she too was allegedly harassed and molested by the accused. Reportedly, she filed the complaint but no action was taken against the accused.

The sister, in her complaint, stated, "I was attacked and beaten up on January 19...We had an auto-rickshaw that they burnt down. I used to work at a shop...but (they) broke in and didn't let me work. When I stay at home, their women come and thrash me. When I step out, they (men) harass me. I am alone...sir, help me. These people say that they aren't scared of the police...(They) don't let me work or earn any money. How am I supposed to run my house? I am in danger...They threaten me...izzat ki jaan ki (of modesty and life)."

The Deputy Commissioner of Police of Shahdara district R Sathiyasundaram said that the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the same accused persons and the entire matter is under investigation.

On January 27, a disturbing video of a woman being paraded in the Shahdara locality of New Delhi by women emerged. The video was shared by DCW Chairperson Maliwal, who also alleged that the survivor's hair was cut and her face was blackened as well. The survivor was allegedly kidnapped from her house.

The incident took place at an east Delhi locality. Maliwal, in her social media post, wrote that she met with the survivor and allegedly came to know that she was gangraped by the assailants, who are illegal liquor sellers. According to Maliwal, the woman was taken to a house in Kasturba Nagar and was gangraped by three men, while there were many women in the house, who were cheering and inciting the men to rape the woman.

Then, the survivor's hair was chopped and she was forced to wear a garland of slippers. She was paraded in the entire locality for an hour. The Indian Express reported that the woman was rescued after her sister and husband called the police.

In this case, the police have arrested 11 people including nine women from the same family. This arrest was made on the basis of the survivor's statement and the video that surfaced online. The police have formed a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case.
