As per the 2013 rule, one gender cannot account for more than 60% of nominations to senior positions. This law was aimed towards getting women better access to top jobs in the civil service. Currently, about 47% of all civil servants in senior positions at the Paris city hall are women.

On Tuesday, during a meeting of the city council, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo described the fine as  ‘absurd’, ‘unfair’, ‘irresponsible’ and ‘dangerous’. She further added that women need to be promoted with determination and vigor as France is still lagging behind on that issue.

France's Public Service Minister Amelie de Montchalin took to Twitter to confirm that the fine had been levied for 2018.

In a message to the Paris Mayor, she said that she wants the fine to be paid by Paris for 2018 to finance concrete actions to promote women in the public service. She further invited the Mayor to the ministry to discuss the issue.

What happened here is a great example of how gender equality balance must be maintained. However most countries, corporation are far from reaching a situation like this, where the gender balance more than favours women. Our guess is that's exactly why this story even made news. It's par for the course for more men to hold top positions and women to not, a story that's considered the 'normal' for most. Through this report, one can hope people see how another world can exist, where at times there is gender imbalance in favour of women and some laws and checks to fix that too!
