A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul asked the Centre to allow women to take the entrance exam for admission in RIMC starting this year, in December instead of waiting till June 2022. It also directed the Centre to publish a modified advertisement, seeking applications from women within the next two days.

According to the TOI report, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, who was appearing for the Centre urged the bench to allow admission of women into RIMC and Rashtriya Military School (RMS) in the term starting January 2023 and not June 2022. She argued that the preparations for the entrance exam to be held on December 18, 2021, were already at an advanced stage. The bench was however not convinced with the proposal of the Centre and directed women to be allowed to take the exam this year itself.

The Army Training Command has filed an affidavit that states that they are making the arrangements for the admissions of girl cadets and candidates for RIMC and RMS for the academic year 2022-2023.

The Supreme Court was also hearing a petition filed by Kailas Udhavrao More, an advocate, against the exclusion of woman candidates in the RIMC and other institutes run by the defence ministry like the Indian Military School, National Yacht Training School, Sainik school among others.

The affidavit mentioned how admission to RIMC was through a biannual entrance exam held all over India in December and June, for admission in January and July. All states of the country are allotted two seats, while states like Maharashtra, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are allotted two.

It also suggested a gradual increase in the capacity from 250 to 300 by inducting five women every six months. Women will be allowed to take the entrance exam scheduled in June 2022 for admission into RIMC in January 2023. There is also a plan to further increase capacity from 300 to 350, with ten girls every month.
