The video was first shared by a twitter user with name Anita Choudhary on 20 September. The 16-second-video has been retweeted 2000 times and viewed 142K times.

Sharing the video, author Shefali Vaidya wrote "Who decides sari is not 'smart wear'? I have worn sarees at the best restaurants in the US, UAE as well in the UK. No-one stopped me. And some Aquila Restaurant dictates a dress code in India and decides saree is not 'smart enough'? Bizarre."

A lot of netizens have taken to social media to express their disgust at the hotel's policy.

"What is a smart casual? If it’s casual it can be anything from saree to jeans to salwar etc. but if saree is not considered smart then it is simply a racist colonial mindset! Also try stopping a women wearing a burkha. We all know what will happen to the restaurant!!", wrote one user.

Don't visit such ridiculous restaurant which is showing negative attitude to the guests, wrote another user. One user, however, pointed out, "I think we mistaking the point, its a bar and pub , where only smart casuals are allowed, and for sure , saree is not casual , its not easy to manage saree after 3/4 shots down. People should understand and know what to wear where".
