Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is the leader of the Congress party's campaign in the election-bound state Uttar Pradesh, read out a list of measures and schemes that her party intends to implement if it wins in next year's election. The party will give a 40% quota to women in government jobs it has announced.

"I'm hoping that this women's manifesto will put pressure on other political parties to address similar issues. We want to start releasing a women-specific manifesto so that women can make their own decisions," she said.

Vadra said that in addition to smartphones, scooters, and free gas cylinders, women senior citizens and widows would receive a monthly pension of 1,000 rupees and that every newborn girl would receive a fixed deposit in her name. A free internet connection will be provided to homes that are headed by a woman.

Vadra also raised the problem of women's safety, which is an important topic given the alarming number of violent crimes against women have experienced in Uttar Pradesh.

"Our goal is to achieve true women's empowerment on a local level. Women's empowerment is frequently discussed in the run-up to elections, but it is mostly confined to the realm of words," said the Congress leader.

"At least 25% of women should be in national duties and the police force, according to Congress. At least one female officer and constable must be present in every chowki, " She reminded reporters that many crimes go unreported because police are hesitant to file charges.

"More female officers in the army or on national duty will help the issue of women," she said.

Uttar Pradesh will be poll-bound in February to March 2022. The state will be voting for a 403 member Legislative Assembly. The term of the current assembly will expire on 14 May 2022. It came into power in 2017.
